Q: i put pencil eyeliner on my top lid then smudge it a bit. but after a while i end up with a black line on my eye socket from my lid. how do i stop it from smudging? i use liquid too but eye use pencil if i want ti to be softer..
A: If you create an "artist canvas" on your eyelids before you apply eyeliner, it will be less likely to smudge. Use whatever you're most comfortable with--you can go with color, like eyeshadow, or you can go neutral. If you go neutral, you can use foundation, concealer, or even a brush on powder. The idea is to create a surface that gives the eyeliner something to cling to--instead of smugding about. If you hunt thru the site I'll leave a link to, you can watch a cosmotologist do an application like this. I wrote some of the articles on their web site. There's lots of good info. And another great hint is to apply something that's a little white-bright and shiney in the inner corner of your eyelids near your nose. Try it, and see how it brights your face--it's and old JeLo trick, and lots of glam types do it. If you use liquid eyeliner, it's best just to use it on the top. The makeup artist at Hollywood MakeupSecrets says it's out of fashion to wear lower yeyliner--just apply a smidge of shadow with a Q-tip. Isn't makeup fun! Play and create--and snap some photos to look at after the fact!
