Q: Is it possible to shrink a pair of jeans that aren't new? I've had them about a year and worn them fairly regularly, but the waist is just slightly looser than I'd like it to be. It'd be great to tighten it up by about one size. I've heard of the trick where you wear the jeans in the bathtub in really hot water, and then let them dry, while still wearing them, by sitting out in bright sunlight. Does that really work? I would probably have trouble finiding the time to do that, anyways. Is there any method that works?
A: I suggest washing them in Hot water in the washing machine, then drying them in a clothes dryer. It might help to repeat this a time or two withOUT wearing them. Of course if they shrink, they will shrink all over, not just in the waist. I actually avoid this as I don't want my jeans to shrink. I wash in cold water and line dry. The best way is to alter them. You need to cut and sew a dart in the back. If you can't sew, try to get a friend to do it for free or cheap. It's probably not worth it to have a professional do this for a pair of jeans. You could just wear a belt and take the money you would have used for a tailor to buy a new pair of jeans. You might be able to find someone taking a sewing class to use your jeans for a project. If you don't know anyone, call the local high shcool home economics teacher, or contact a fabric store that offers sewing classes. Someone might need a project. It would take about 30 minutes to do this project.
