Q: Hi there iam going on a student exchage trip to new york, from november through to febuary, i have heard that the weather can be really cold, i will be doing a lot of walking in the cold weather, which iam not looking forward to, i know it sounds silly but iam not a big fan of wearing huge coats and jackets so thinner items of clothes would be better, i dont have a clue what to pack and what to wear?, so a lot of help is needed, also you hints and tips for keeping warm would be helpful aswell. thanks p.s i also have msn or yahoo messenger and aim, if you wish to help me through that
A: I went over in March and found the weather as changeable as here in the uk! one day it was sunny and we were all walking around in t-shirts the next day it snowed and i sooo was not prepared. I had a pair of trainers as my sensible footwear for walking and they soaked through and I spent a day with numb feet! so i recommend a good pair of waterproof flat boots with some lining to keep your feet warm. Again with the coat/jacket something waterproof and warm. I'm not a big fan of coats either but it is unavoidable in NY I noticed that a lot of the locals were wearing Northern Face (i think thats what its called) coats so perhaps look into this. One thing that I noticed while over there is that they seem to love their air con/ heaters which seems obvious really as its cold but going from outside to in left me quite dehydrated! Another thing I experienced, which I had never before in this country, was windburn (owwwww!) If you are doing a lot of walking you may find that you walk over the bridges and the wind is bitterly cold and cuts through your clothes and causes a sensation similar to sunburn. So try to avoid any clothes that the wind can cut through. Jeans are not great for keeping out the elements unfortunately as much as they are a staple. Also to combat the windburn make sure you have some intensive moisturising at home (if you experience it). I hope that i have helped a bit. NY is AMAZING so you may find that you are freezing cold but you havent even noticed because you are too excited about being there! Goodluck!
